What is Festival of Cinema NYC?

Formally known as Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema, Festival of Cinema NYC is a competitive film festival with programming that consists of over 100 remarkable short and feature length films, of all lengths, genres and subjects from around the world over a ten day period. Our third event will be taking place August 2-11, 2019. This rebranding will allow the festival to expand its appeal, helping attract attendees and filmmakers from around the world, to the city’s most ethnically diverse borough.

Festival of Cinema NYC (formerly Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema) was founded by filmmakers who were looking to break the stereotypes often associated with Independent Cinema. In 2017, 3000 visitors from around the world attended the festival which presented films at the Kew Gardens Cinemas and the Queens Museum. 157 films were showcased from as far as Australia and Japan, along with locally produced films and others from across the USA. Several films acquired agency representation, while two actually received distribution!

Our sophomore year attracted amazing sponsors like Regal Cinemas and SAG-AFTRA, and was endorsed by the NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment. Our move to a bigger location saw larger attendance numbers than the previous year, with five times the amount of sold out showings!

In just two years, Festival of Cinema NYC has already been ranked as one of the ‘Top 100 Best Reviewed Festivals’ on FilmFreeway. According to reviews from real FilmFreeway users, the festival ranks in the top 2% of more than 6,000 film festivals and creative contests around the world.

Festival of Cinema NYC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization established to support the development, and help expand the audiences, of independent cinema from around the globe. Understanding the struggle in today’s film environment to showcase independent cinema, our aim is to establish a presence and awareness of cinematic creativity throughout NYC, Queens and the neighboring communities.

Festival of Cinema NYC has quickly become influential in bringing the community together over a 10 day period. Consisting of film screenings and other activities related to the movie business, including encouraging Q&A's and industry panels to broaden the appeal of Independent film and promote audience participation.

Why should I participate in Festival of Cinema NYC?

Formerly known as Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema, Festival of Cinema NYC returns for it's third year and will be taking place from August 2 to August 11, 2019!

Now bigger and better than before, Festival of Cinema NYC is sponsored by the Queens Museum, and Regal Entertainment Group – the 2nd largest theater chain in the United States. Screenings take place at the Regal UA Midway in Forest Hills, Queens, where our films are projected on grand screens with state of the art sound and projection. Additionally, attendees experience each screening in the comfort of the theaters recliner seats.

Over at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, filmmakers and festival guests can take advantage of free programming, industry panels, workshops, and additional screenings.

The support of these established organizations allows Festival of Cinema NYC to bring truly Independent cinema to mainstream audiences, breaking the stereotypes that are often associated with lower budget independent films.

Hailed by The Wall Street Journal as an event that New Yorkers are “taking note of,” and with coverage in major media including The New York Times, The Huffington Post and Time Out New York, Festival of Cinema NYC aims to put Independent filmmakers in the spotlight by offering opportunities like no other independent film festival. Our publicity team works to get the most news and media coverage for as many of our films as possible. In the past our filmmakers have been spotlighted on such news media as Page Six and NY1 News on Spectrum Time Warner. Further promotional opportunities available to our filmmakers include participation on the Festival Talks Daily Podcasts, Red Carpet interviews, as well as opportunities for filmmakers to participate on filmmaker panels to discuss the challenges faced in the independent film industry.

This year we are honored to partner with a variety of local and international sponsors who will be presenting panels and workshops. Sponsors include The New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, SAG-AFTRA, Moviemaker Magazine, Variety 411, Final Draft, Simple DCP, Soundview Media Partners, Synimatica, The Acting Studio NYC, Seed & Spark, Yelp and Big City Graphics. Festival of Cinema NYC is a competitive festival that accepts films and media of all lengths, genres and subjects. Awards in over 15 categories include Best Feature and Short Narrative, Best Documentary, Best Animation, Music Video & Experimental, and Best Web Series. Audience choice for Feature and Short film are also awarded. Winners can expect to walk away with an amazing custom statuette as well as over $15,000 in prizes being offered from some of our amazing sponsors.

Our festival hosts panels and workshops that strongly appeal to filmmakers. Subjects including distribution and production resources, as well as workshops by industry leaders such as Sag-Aftra and Seed & Spark have been very popular amongst our filmmakers and attendees. Past panelists and Jury Board members have included Anna Garduno, Executive Producer at Netflix; Charles E. Williams, two time Emmy award winner at CBS; and Doug LeClaire, founder of Asbury Shorts USA.

As the founder of the Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema and a native of Glendale Queens, Jayson studied acting at The Acting Studio NYC and began making his own movies since 2000. With over 40 credits on IMDB.com and having written, directed and produced 12 films, his passion makes him the perfect candidate to launch a major film festival.

Caroline Lim
Operations Manager

Another Queens native, Caroline Lim was raised in Oakland Gardens, NY and studied biochemistry and mathematics at Binghamton University. Caroline is no stranger to number-crunching, having spent 13 years as an actuary, where she analyzed risk for financial investments and insurance policies. Besides running a baking company that serves Queens locals, she is an event organizer who promotes positive community and economic growth throughout New York City neighborhoods.

Bob Giovanelli
Programming Team

First working at the Hamptons International Film Festival as a volunteers coordinator, he later became a venues manager, a Q&A coordinator, and film screener for the programming team. (where he was the first to champion an unknown film entitled “OPEN WATER”, ahead of its purchase by Lions Gate at Sundance). Bob became a volunteer worker at Sundance in 1998, holding numerous positions including crowd liaison, assistant manager, and finally a Theater Manager at the world-famous Egyptian Theater in Park City, for a consecutive 20 years. In 2015 he helped screen narrative features.

Other festivals Bob has worked include the Gen Art Film Festival , Telluride, Sarasota, Provincetown, Nantucket, Shorts Int’l (NYC), NYC’s first Drone Film Festival, the New Yorker Festival, and the New York Film Festival, holding positions such as film screener, print traffic manager and venue manager.

Doug LeClaire
Doug LeClaire is an award winning Line Producer of national television commercials and major cable network promos. He has produced advertising and promotional television campaigns for Lifetime TV Networks; WE tv; Comedy Central; MTV; Spike, Oxygen as well as the NBC and ABC TV Networks.

Doug was the Unit Production Supervisor on a series of national spots created by the City of New York soon after September 11, 2001 when Mayor Giuliani recruited legendary director Joe Pytka to shoot special public service announcements emphasizing how New York City was “back in business” post 9/11. The PSA’s featured Kevin Bacon, Ben Stiller, Henry Kissinger, Al Roker, Harrison Ford, Vanessa Williams and Woody Allen.

Since 2006 Doug LeClaire has line produced two independent feature films: “Greetings from the Shore,” directed by Greg Chwerchak. The film features stars Kim Shaw, Paul Sorvino and Jay O. Sanders. Also: “Broadway’s Finest,” winner of over 7 national film festival awards, directed by Stephen Marro. Over the past couple of years Doug served as the Line Producer on a series of concert background videos for Roger Waters through Breathe Productions and the Te A Me promo sensation: “Drink the Tea Donald Trump” for the FishEye Creative ad agency from India.

In 1981 Doug founded Asbury Shorts USA, now New York City’s longest running short film exhibition and touring show. Asbury Short’s mission is to keep award-winning short films in theaters as opposed to You Tube, computers or smart phones. Asbury Shorts has presented their short film “concerts” in historic venues from Los Angeles to Berlin. Doug directed two award-winning shorts in the 1980’s: “The Problem,” and “Surprise,” which played 10 times on HBO.

Anna Garduno
Anna Garduno is the Executive Producer of the Netflix TV series "Sacred Games” based on the novel of the same name written by Vikram Chandra, currently in production. Ms. Garduno was the President/Partner of Darkwoods Productions with writer / director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Walking Dead). She worked as a Producer on "The Majestic" starring Jim Carey and "The Mist" starring Marcia Gay Harden. She assisted Mr. Darabont on "The Green Mile" starring Tom Hanks and the development of the original pilot for The Walking Dead TV Series.
Anna is currently developing the untitled TOKYO ROSE project written by Tony/Oscar winner Christopher Hampton. Ms. Garduno produced the Off- Broadway production of EPITAPH FOR GEORGE DILLON by John Osborne & Anthony Creighton, directed by Larry Moss.
Anna is a prolific voice over artist and has been nominated for a Best Character Performance Award for the in role of Kiera for video game, "Jak & Daxter" 1 & 2 by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. Anna is also is the voice of Palmon in the "Digimon" film & series. She continues to be the voice of Selby the polar bear in the animated series "Kioka”. As an actress she has worked on many film and television shows through her career as well as her involvement with the NY Theater scene.
Anna continues to work as one of the country’s best voice over teachers. She was voted the best voice over teacher in both NY and LA. While she splits her time between the two coasts, Anna makes NYC her home.

Michael Sládek
Filmmaker and theater director Michael Sládek's feature-length films include Con Artist (New Yorker Films, The Orchard), BAM150 (Cinema Guild), and Devils Are Dreaming (Dances With Films Jury Award). A 2013 Acker Award recipient, he recently completed the narrative short All Against the Sea (Woodstock Film Festival) while developing new works through his Brooklyn-based company Plug Ugly Films. His animated music video We Live On Your Street won Slamdance Jury & Anarchy awards and was distributed by Spike & Mike's Festival of Animation. Sládek has made multiple shorts, music videos, branded content videos, and industrials for various clients including BAM, Maxim, Interview, Arista Records, etc. His most recent theater piece was Richard Dresser's Below the Belt at Westbeth Arts NYC. Currently serving as the New York Consultant for SAGindie, Sládek worked for Tribeca Film Festival, MTV News, The Clinton Foundation, author Jamaica Kincaid, ad agency Jacobs & Gerber, and as manager/marketing designer for the punk bands Stupid and The Sobs. A member of SAG-AFTRA, he acted professionally in theater and film after studying acting and directing at UCLA and Orange Coast College. He was a member of Orange Coast Repertory and trained with the experimental company Kadmus Theater Studio in LA and Vermont. Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Sládek finished high school in Newport Beach, California.

Ramfis Myrthil
Ramfis Myrthil is a New York-based filmmaker, founding partner and co-President of Beast of the East Productions (BOTEP), and produced the Mary Pickford biopic “Why Not Choose Love: A Mary Pickford Manifesto.”
Through BOTEP he produced “Bridge and Tunnel,” earning 12 awards and 30+ nominations across 40+ festivals, and a limited theatrical run before being picked up by Amazon.
Most recently, Ramfis attended The 2018 Sundance Film Festival with “A Boy, A Girl, and A Dream,” which placed among the top 18 films for the entire festival.
His previous film, “Good Business,” featured Academy Award winner Mercedes Ruehl, winning two Best Comedy awards before being picked up by Shorts International.
Ramfis’ proudest achievements are producing The Zombie’s first-ever music video “Any Other Way,” and premiering “Love and The Small Print,” at Cannes, where Shorts International pick it up for worldwide distribution.
In 2013, Ramfis produced the Hurricane Sandy documentary “Powerless,” as part of a campaign for hurricane relief in Long Beach NY. The city awarded it a special Proclamation.
Ramfis is an active member of BAFTA NY, The Friars Club, The Hollywood Radio & Television Society (HRTS), Toastmasters International, and the advisory board of the Long Island Film/TV Foundation.

Kavery Kaul
Born in Kolkata, India, longtime New Yorker Kavery Kaul is an award-winning director and producer of documentaries shown in theaters and on television in the U.S. and internationally. Her work has been exhibited at the National Museum for Women in Art (DC), the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the High Museum (Atlanta). It has been screened at the Telluride, Rotterdam, Havana, London, and Sydney Film Festivals, in countries including India, Japan, Burkina Faso, Czechoslovakia and Italy.
Her feature documentary Long Way from Home was a Critic’s Pick in Time Out, Booklist and Film Threat. One Hand Don’t Clap began its U.S. theatrical release at New York’s Village East Cinema, and Rhapsody Films calls it one of their top ten DVDs ever. Back Walking Forward was showcased at Harlem’s Maysles Cinema. Her cultural documentaries First Look and Wild at Art were both broadcast on PBS-TV; and Cuban Canvas was featured at the Artes de Cuba Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (DC).
Kavery is a Fulbright Fellow and the recipient of a Proclamation of Excellence from New York City for her work as a filmmaker. She is a Tedx speaker on the importance of stories that connect people.

an award-winning actress, writer/director and producer. Credits include producer on the award winning feature film Gold Star starring Robert Vaughn, associate producer on the award-winning Slamdance feature Hank and Asha, producer of Not Right Now, Waiting For The Sun, The Session and writer, director, and star of the award winning web-series LI Divas. Acting credits include: Billions, Search Party, Blue Bloods, All Hallow’s Eve, The Session, Sex and The City, and Red Canyon. Katie is currently in post production with the digital series SWITCH starring Olympia Dukakis in which she produced, acted in, and directed.

Charles E. Williams
Charles E. Williams, Jr. is a two time Emmy award winner for his work on “Defining Moments” and Super Storm Sandy for CBS Television. He received a nomination for “Bringing Home Rosie”, a series about adoption.
His Career spans more than 30 years in radio, television and news media. In 1988, he was recognized by the National Cancer Society for his multi-part series on “Men and Breast Cancer”. Also, in 1990 The National Association of Black Journalist recognized his work with CBS for another multi-part series called “New York in Black and White. The series took an in-depth look at race relations in New York City, when racial tension where at an all-time high. In 2004 he was presented with the “McDonald’s Black Media Legend Award” for his outstanding work in media. His 2014 Documentary “Brown Babies: The Mischlingskinder Story”, won Best Documentary at the “American Black Film Festival”.
In October 2003, he created WEG Media Group, a multi-level award-winning company which has produced four films, several television shows and countless web creations.
Mr. Williams is a member of the National Association of Black Journalist and One Hundred Black Men of New York. Also, in his spare time he gives back to the community by mentoring young men and women in the field of journalism and media.

1. Objectives: Our Mission is to celebrate the art of filmmaking and the contribution of filmmakers by hosting an international film festival to support the development and expand the audience reach of independent cinema from around the globe

2. Dates: Festival of Cinema NYC will take place from August 2, 2019 to August 11, 2019

3. Programs: Films will be considered for inclusion in the following programmatic categories

5. Submission Guidelines

A. Submission Formats: For programming consideration, the festival accepts DVD (NTSC only), FilmFreeway Online screeners, or Vimeo links for the complete film. The Festival will not consider trailers or rough edits for selection purposes.

Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for consideration, all films must meet the following requirements:

i. Be available to screen by August 2, 2019. Filmmakers must provide Festival of Cinema NYC with a clean, clear print for projection. While DCP format is preferred and highly recommended, filmmakers must provide the film for presentation in acceptable HD digital formats (MUST be professionally authored). PLEASE NOTE: Due to the digital transition of our screening location, we are unable to show film, HDCAM, or BetaCam formats.

ii. Not have been commercially screened in the US, or available for video or internet distribution prior to August 2, 2019.

iii. Be in their original language with English subtitles when applicable.

iv. Have been completed production within 2016-2019.

v. Multiple web series episodes will be considered as a whole. Exhibition copy shall not differ from originally submitted materials. Incomplete exhibition copies may be disqualified.

vi. Films previously submitted to the festival and not programmed will only be considered for the 2019 Festival if they meet all the other eligibility requirements as outlined here, and only if it has changed significantly from the previous version submitted.

vii. DCP copies must be received by Simple DCP (NOT postmarked), by June 23rd, 2019.

viii. Hard copy exhibition copies must be received at our New York office address (NOT postmarked), by June 23rd, 2019.

ix. Filmmakers whose exhibition materials are not received by the deadline will be subject to any and all expenses that may arise due to express shipping costs.

Deadlines: Early submission is strongly encouraged with reduced entry fees until November 4, 2018. Final submission deadline is April 14, 2019. The Festival is not obliged to view late entries.

Send a printed copy of your completed Entry Form.

ii. A clearly marked DVD (NTSC) or Blu Ray Region (0 or 1) of your completed film, labeled with title, tracking number, running time and screening format. We also accept FilmFreeway online screeners and Vimeo links, but we require ALL submissions to be registered with one of our submission platforms. We cannot return submitted copies of films.

iii. Applicable entry fee submitted

Electronic Press Kits only. Hard copy materials submitted with the films will be discarded.

Selections: Films will be selected and entrants will be notified on or approximately by May 20, 2019.

H. Requirements for Selected Films:
Once an entry has been reviewed and selected for the festival, a preliminary notification letter will be issued by email. All selected applicants will be notified by May 20, 2019. Upon notification, Festival of Cinema NYC may request additional press kits and press screeners for each film, sent to the Festival via priority mail, complete with any additional promotional and marketing items needed.

Any unused press materials may be picked up at the press office at the conclusion of the festival. Posters must remain displayed through the end of the day Sunday August 12, 2018. All unclaimed materials will be disposed of 30 days upon conclusion of the Festival.

Promotional Usage: Participants agree that all materials related to their film may be published in the Festival Guide, website, ticketing system, and other promotional materials or property and in all media. Posters and images of the film may be used independently as well as in combination with images from other films to promote the film and Festival of Cinema NYC

J. Clearances: If selected for screening, all commercial/private property including trademark and/or copyrighted materials shown and recorded in the project must come with authorized permission for screening. The filmmaker remains entirely liable for any claims that may occur in result of screening the film.

K Print Liability: Festival of Cinema NYC holds no responsibility for prints damaged upon arrival and may reject or replace the film in the festival if this requirement is not met. The festival will insure the safety of film prints only from the time of delivery to the festival through the time the print is delivered to a shipping agent for return. In case of loss or damage to a print, the festival must receive notification and independent verification immediately. The festival’s obligation is limited to compensating the producer only for the cost of replacing the drive(s).

Print Shipping:

Selected film prints must be received by PREPAID courier no later than 10 days prior to first screening date unless pre-approved by Festival of Cinema NYC

Prints must be clearly marked with the film’s title and the sender’s return address exactly as listed below.
